How a workbook quest works.

Each treasure hunt leads from number clues to a secret number. That number tells you which squares to colour in the adventure’s picture.

Find a sum
In each row, find two different numbers that add to a third. Circle the sum.
Keep five answers
Copy one answer from each row. Five little clues, ready for the next step.
Unlock the secret
Two of your five answers add to a third. That third number is your secret.
Colour & discover
Use the hunt’s colour on matching numbers in the picture. Watch the adventure picture take shape.

A helper's field notes

What do we need?

Have these ten pencil colours nearby: blue, pink, red, yellow, orange, grey, brown, purple, green and black.

White paper stays white. Leave unnumbered squares uncoloured too.

A helpful nudge

Try one row at a time. Ask, Which two different numbers add to a third? Copy each circled sum into its answer box.

After the five row clues, look among the five answers for the secret addition. Then use the hunt's colour on the matching numbered squares.

Solve addition puzzles, find each hunt's colour, then colour numbered tiles to make a picture. Here is how the workbook works.

What is it?

Colour Quests are addition puzzle and colouring workbooks. Kitten Discovery and Puppy Discovery each contain 2 adventures, with 10 hunts in each adventure: 20 hunts and 120 puzzles in each workbook. The maths is Addition up to 10.

Each hunt has five number-row puzzles and one final addition puzzle. Solving the final addition gives a colour to use on the adventure's colouring map. The picture is made from the coloured tiles; blank tiles stay white.

The village on this website is a separate place to explore alongside the workbooks.

How does a hunt work?

Start with a row of five numbers. Find two different numbers in that row which add up to a third number in the same row. Circle the sum, then copy it into that row's answer box. For example, in the row 3, 4, 7, 8, 9, 3 + 4 = 7: circle 7 and write 7 in the box.

Complete all five rows. Then look at the five answers you have written. Find two which add up to a third and write that final addition. For example, answers 3, 5, 6, 8, 10 give 3 + 5 = 8.

Use the final answer to find the colour. The key is 7 = Orange, 8 = Blue, 9 = Brown, 10 = Pink. In the example, the final answer is 8, so the hunt's colour is Blue.

Finish the 10 hunts in the adventure, then colour its map. Use the hunt colours to colour the numbered tiles once. The coloured tiles form the picture. Leave the blank tiles white.

Is it suitable for my child?

The current workbook previews use Addition up to 10. Open a sample together and see whether your child can find two different numbers that add to a third, copy the sum into a box, and follow the colouring key. They can work independently or with your help.

The actual sample pages below show the puzzle layout and numbered colouring map, so you can judge the fit.

Can I try it?

Yes. Open the Kitten hunt page and try solving its number rows together on paper. The preview lets you read and zoom into an actual workbook page. You can also open the numbered colouring map.
